The ET@T Archive, which went live in 2016, is Taiwan’s first free, online archive that can be used without registering. It contains writing, and images, which are commonly seen in archives, and films, which are not. In late 2014, without the benefit of funding or professional researchers, ET@T started compiling files and digitizing film, and ever since, has reflected on how to analyze and share files, cultivated its archive management skills, and cultivated its archive management and website development skills. ET@T has also researched existing archives and often found that interpretations and firsthand accounts of people and events—even by concerned parties—in the records do not always perfectly coincide. The limited perspective provided by images, the time gap between the creation and viewing of archival materials, the variations in reader experience and levels of professional training all contribute to differences in analysis. While in some cases this may create significant problems regarding the acceptance of historical facts, for ET@T it mostly entails subjective perceptual differences because our archives focus on the circumstances under which art is made.
